Support
HLF relies on the generosity of people who appreciate the history and beauty of our community and wish to preserve its physical and intellectual history.

Through the ongoing support of donors, HLF is able to lead and encourage preservation activities, such as the designation of Jordan's Point as a historic district. By giving to the Annual Fund, you truly are helping to be the conscience of the built environment in Lexington and the surrounding area.

Because we are a non-profit organization, your donations are tax-deductible as allowed by the IRS. Please also remember HLF in your estate planning.

DONATE ONLINE

DONATE BY CHECK
If you would prefer to contribute by check, please make it payable to the Historic Lexington Foundation and then mail your check to the Historic Lexington Foundation, PO Box 901, Lexington, VA 24450 or, if more convenient, drop it off at our offices at 224 McLaughlin St., Lexington VA.
DONATE STOCK OR OTHER SECURITIES
Gifts of appreciated securities are generally more beneficial to the donor than gifts of cash. A gift of stock with a long-term capital gain entitles a donor to a charitable deduction for the full current market value of the stock and is exempt from any capital gains tax. For example, if you acquired stock for $1,000 and the current market value is $5,000, you may be able to deduct the full $5,000 and avoid the tax on the $4,000 capital gain. Under IRS rules, the value of the gift is the mean of the high and low price on the day the stock passes from the donor's control.
If you wish to make a gift of securities, you may do so via electronic transfer. Do NOT sell the stock in your name and have the proceeds sent to us, as this will constitute a cash contribution, and you will be liable for any capital gains tax.
Please provide your broker the following information to make a gift of securities such as stock:

DONATE FROM YOUR IRA ACCOUNT
If you are at least 70 1/2, you can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly from your traditional IRA account (including inactive SEP and SIMPLE plans) and avoid income taxes on the distribution and possibly reduce Medicare surcharges. Distributions from other types of retirement plans (401(k), 403(b), 457, Keogh, etc.) do NOT qualify. If you are subject to a Required Minimum Distribution, the federal tax exclusion may allow you to remain in a lower income tax bracket.

A QCD must be distributed directly to the charity by your IRA administrator – amounts distributed to you first and then given to the charity do NOT qualify as a QCD. The charity must receive the QCD on or before December 31 to be counted in the current tax year. A postmark date of December 31 is not sufficient. To complete this gift, instruct your IRA administrator to send a check directly from your account, payable to the Historic Lexington Foundation at PO Box 901, Lexington, VA 24450.
BEQUESTS AND BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS
Bequests and beneficiary designations provide an effective way for friends of the Historic Lexington Foundation to provide future support for the Foundation’s charitable activities. Because bequests and beneficiary designations are not binding, you will be able to modify your gift if your circumstances change.
In your will or trust, you can designate the Historic Lexington Foundation as the beneficiary of a specific amount or percentage of your residuary estate. Such a designation requires merely a simple provision in your will or trust that the Foundation will be happy to provide.
In a similar manner, you can designate the Historic Lexington Foundation as the beneficiary of a specific amount or percentage of your retirement plan assets, a life insurance policy or a bank or brokerage account. Such a designation may have advantageous income and estate tax benefits for your estate and other beneficiaries.
If you would like additional information regarding these various giving opportunities, we will be glad to provide it. Please contact our Executive Director either by email at hlf@rockbridge.net or telephone at 540-463-6832 to request additional information.
DONATE REAL ESTATE
Gifts of real estate, such as a primary residence, commercial property or undeveloped land in the City of Lexington or in Rockbridge County also will be considered by the Foundation. To make such a gift, please contact our executive director either by email at hlf@rockbridge.net or telephone at 540-463-6832 to describe the property and discuss the proposed timing and other details of the gift.
