About Us
Historic Lexington Foundation (HLF) is a not-for-profit organization promoting the preservation of the rich architectural and related historic resources of Rockbridge County, Virginia. Incorporated in 1966, at a time when many of Lexington’s buildings were threatened with demolition by neglect, HLF today supports and interprets the heritage and fabric of Lexington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge County.
Our recent and prospective activities include the following:
-
Protecting the area’s pervasive and important architectural history
-
Restoring Lexington’s historic cemeteries and illuminating the lives of those who are buried in them
-
Conserving and encouraging greater appreciation of other historic cemeteries throughout Rockbridge County
-
Shining a light on the legacy of slavery in Rockbridge
-
Preserving historic county schools that are threatened by neglect
-
Celebrating and promoting the area’s historic barns
-
Informing and inspiring the community through publications, tours, programs and similar activities.

Online or in person, HLF welcomes you to our historic county and encourages your support and involvement in preservation activities.
HLF's Founding and Early Days
Matthew W. Paxton Jr., a co-founder of Historic Lexington Foundation, recalled the drama surrounding our creation in 1972 remarks to the Fortnightly, a Lexington discussion club. His remarks remain a vivid and valuable documentation.
Commonwealth: The Magazine of Virginia published by the state Chamber of Commerce, published this article in March 1974 about Historic Lexington Foundation’s downtown efforts.
